How to Prepare for Confession
Whether it has been a month, a year, or many years since your last confession, Christ is waiting to welcome you with mercy, forgiveness, and peace.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is one of the greatest gifts Christ has given His Church. Through this sacrament, we encounter God’s mercy, receive forgiveness for our sins, and are strengthened to follow Him more faithfully. No matter how long it has been since your last confession, you are always welcome.
1. Pray
Begin by asking the Holy Spirit to help you honestly examine your heart. Ask God to reveal where you have fallen short and to give you the courage to seek His mercy.
2. Examine Your Conscience
Take time to reflect on your thoughts, words, actions, and omissions since your last confession. Consider your relationship with God, your family, your friends, and those around you. An Examination of Conscience can be a helpful guide.
3. Be Truly Sorry
Confession is more than listing sins—it is coming to God with a sincere desire to turn away from sin and grow closer to Him. Trust in His love and mercy.
4. Go to the Priest
When you enter the confessional, begin by saying:
“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [length of time] since my last confession.”
Then simply confess your sins honestly and completely. The priest is there to listen, offer guidance, and extend Christ’s forgiveness—not to judge you.
5. Pray the Act of Contrition
After your confession, the priest will invite you to pray an Act of Contrition, expressing your sorrow and your desire to follow Christ more faithfully.
6. Receive God’s Forgiveness
The priest will pray the Prayer of Absolution, and through the ministry of the Church, your sins are forgiven. This is a powerful encounter with God’s mercy and grace.
7. Complete Your Penance
Before leaving the church, complete the penance the priest assigns. This may be a prayer, Scripture reading, or another simple act to help strengthen your relationship with God.
Remember
- Every priest has heard it all before—you won’t shock him.
- Everything said in Confession is completely confidential.
- God rejoices whenever someone returns to Him.
- Don’t let fear keep you from experiencing His mercy.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9
